June 2026 - I had occasion to walk past the old rail headquarters, Buchanan House, in Port Dundas Street Glasgow the other day and this is what I saw..

or more like what I didn't see..it was gone.

The building was originally built is 1966 and I first set foot in it in 1975 when I took a summer job for the 'Passanger Transport Survey' section. Little did I know that four years later I would join the S&T department and work in that building for the next 17 years.

The S&T department was located on the fifth floor in the back section of the building and the Electronics Section was right at the rear of that in the open plan drawing office. Over time the Electronics Section moved to two other offices on the fifth flour - we were too noisy building our TDM's etc., the first was mid way between the Telecoms and Signalling departments. During that time we also had an office in the Scottish & Newcastle building next door and from the 5th floor office we also witnessed its demolition. We finally moved to the front of the 5th floor where it became apparent that the building was seriously crumbing, a couple of times a bit of concrete fell off the facade and landed near the main entrance.

The building was later clad in some form of skin to make it look a bit better but it seemed to continue to have problems as that was covered in netting for it's remaining years.

I understand that the vacated space will be used for housing..
