Trying Open Media Vault NAS Software
Back in 2018 (we're now in 2025) I tried out Open Media Vault on a Raspberry Pi 3B+, the ethernet port just had an upgrade to work up to 300Mb/s so I thought it would make a good store for some video media for streaming to my TV. Unfortunately I needed to reboot the Pi every couple of weeks as it would slow down to a crawl. At that time I was using v3 or 4 of OMV.
Now we have Raspberry Pi5 with full speed USB 3, Gb ethernet and OMV v7 so I thought I'd set it up again to see how it performs now.
So I used a Raspberry Pi5 4Gb model with a Pimeroni NVMe base and a Waveshare POE HAT. I added my SanDisk Ultra 2 SSD drive via a USB/SATA interface as the shared drive.
It has been running now for over four weeks without any loss of performance so I am beginning to feel comfortable with its ongoing reliability.

The OMV dashboard.

The Pi5 is setup ready to go with Open Media Vault installed on the ssd drive. This should be far more stable and reliable than the micro SD card used with the Pi3 B+.

The final setup with the USB connected SSD.

Placed on the shelf in the rack and plugged into the POE+ switch. I did a couple of tests copying files to and from the NAS and I found that copying from a WIN8 machine I got transfer speeds of 114Mb/s and from a Pi5 about 85Mb/s - probably topping out my 1Gb network. I'll be checking in on it's reliablity in the coming weeks and months and if all goes well I'll be looking to scale up the attached storage.
